What a SEPA payment QR code is for

  • Invoices that get paid

The code on the invoice removes the most error-prone step: typing a 24-character IBAN by hand.

  • Donations and dues

Associations and clubs print it on the form: the same amount, the same reference, zero mistakes.

  • Split the bill

Leave the amount empty and each person types what they owe before confirming in their bank.

The European banking standard, engraved

The code follows EPC069-12, the European Payments Council specification: twelve lines with the payee, the IBAN, the amount in euros and the reference. It is what Spanish and European banking apps expect when they open their camera.

It is static and it works offline: the transfer data travels inside the code, so no server has to be up. What the code never carries is a password or access to the account — only the data to prefill the transfer, which the payer still has to confirm.

SEPA payment QR code questions

Does it work with Bizum?

The code follows the EPC standard for SEPA transfers, which the banking apps that include Bizum read from their own scanner. Bizum by phone number is a different flow inside each bank and is not part of this standard.

Can I leave the amount empty?

Yes. Leave it blank and whoever scans types the amount in their own bank before confirming. Useful for donations and for splitting a bill.

Can someone take money with this code?

No. The code only fills in a transfer TOWARDS your account: it carries no password and grants no access. The payer still has to confirm it in their bank.

These questions do not depend on the code type, and they are worth reading before sending anything to print: what size to print a QR code at , why a heavily customised code stops scanning and how static and dynamic codes differ .
